The Willow School and Broadwaters' Children's Centre

Our Approach to Learning

What we want for our children.

At the heart of our setting is a strong commitment to secure, respectful and nurturing relationships. We believe that warm, trusting relationships are fundamental to children’s development and underpin all learning, enabling children to feel safe, confident and ready to learn.

We serve a diverse community and value the individuality of every child. Our curriculum is rooted in attachment theory and informed by approaches such as Circle of Security and the Anchor Project, ensuring that all children feel understood, supported and able to fully access the curriculum. We have a strong focus on meeting the needs of children with SEND through skilled staff and carefully planned, individualised support.

As a Children’s Centre, we recognise that we are more than a nursery. We place high importance on working in partnership with families and the wider community, understanding that children’s learning and development are strengthened through consistent, trusting relationships between home and setting.

We are committed to delivering high-quality early education, underpinned by consistently high expectations for all children. Language development is at the heart of our curriculum and underpins all areas of learning. We place a strong emphasis on developing children’s communication and language skills, enabling them to express themselves clearly, develop their thinking and fully access the full curriculum.

Children are supported to develop as active, engaged learners who are curious, motivated and willing to take appropriate risks in their learning. Through meaningful experiences, including regular outdoor learning and forest school, children are encouraged to explore, solve problems, persist in the face of challenge and develop independence and resilience.

We aim for all children to develop a strong sense of self, independence and belonging, so that they leave as confident, capable learners, well prepared for the next stage of their learning journey.
